The light at night is beautiful and sometimes odd. Seeing different homes and their surroundings, the joy with which some people decorate for the holidays, the vulnerability of our infrastructure, the combination of isolation and community spirit — helps me think of other people and makes me feel very small. Concepts such as The Clock of the Long Now, and the blending of the past and present, are ideas that become real when you are looking at the night sky, and standing in a place which has been home for many different inhabitants for a long time.
